My journey as a teacher started 35 years ago, and till today is a significant part of my creative career. After graduating as a Masteflorist in the Nederlands, I moved to Japan.
The year was 1992, I worked as 1st assistant with the Japanese champion Ms. Takahashi.
Living in Japan was critical in honing my skills as a novice floral designer; It gave me a direction where I want to go with my style. The Japanese floral art and its philosophy are unparalleled.
The purity of its materials, the concept of space, the expressions of meditative composure, all very pure, very inspiring. Living in Japan was an education.
It was also in Japan, more precisely in Osaka, that I open my first flower school, the Mauve Studio. Being a floral teacher in Japan was a kick start to go back to floral classes to learn more about floral design even though I was already a MASTER FLORIST.
I became a student of Ikebana Sogetsu and found myself again in a classroom, learning from another Master. From all the things I learned in Japan, the lesson that stuck the most was there is no ending to learning floristry.
After Japan, I traveled the world, lived in many other countries, assimilating their cultures, architecture, traditions, always learning something new. I had the honor of working with some of the best floral designers in the world and learning from them. I also had the privilege of sharing my knowledge with others and watching them bloom into new careers, hobbies, and championships.
I have learned throughout that excellence is never by accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution, and knowledge of many masters of craftsmanship.
